HPV or the human papilloma virus is known to be the number one sexually transmitted disease in the U.S affecting more than twenty five-million people. This is one of the many diseases which have no absolute cure but the good thing is, there are treatments available to stop the symptoms from getting worse. The most common symptom among those who have this kind of disease is the warts. A common warts can be found in hands and feet however if it is HPV, it could occur in different parts of the body most especially on the genital areas. Though the symptoms starts or can only be seen as a wart, it can escalate to a deadlier form of disease such as cancer.

Causes and Symptoms of HPV

HPV is a disease that can be transmitted sexually or by skin-to-skin contact. If you have an open wound or abrasion, the virus could enter your body through it if you made contact with an infected person. Those that have been experiencing genital warts have got it from sexual intercourse, anal sex or friction in the genital area. There are also some rare cases where a mother could pass HPV to a new-born baby during childbirth.

The symptoms may vary depending on the cause above. Genital warts could appear in the anus, vagina or penis for those who have sexual intercourse with a person who is infected with the disease. Lesions may also occur in the oral cavity, upper-respiratory tract and other parts of the body. In worst cases, it could lead to fatal diseases such as cancer of the mouth, cervix and anus if it was not detected immediately.

Prevention and Treatments

For a higher chance of preventing the disease from getting you infected, safe sex must be practice. Wear condoms properly. Condoms may not ensure a 100% HPV free life however it can protect you from most types of HPV. Being a faithful partner can also safe keep you from harm of different sexual transmitted disease. You and your partner must be clean and not infected. Vaccination is also available for kids ages 10-12. Gardasil which is being administered to girls before they become socially active can prevent you from being infected and it also reduces the risk of cancer.

HPV detection is important to stop the symptoms from getting worse. A wart can change to a horrible looking transformation and it needs to be treated immediately to avoid your other body parts from getting infected. Doctors might provide prescription about creams and ointments that can be applied to totally heal the wounds. For those who have cancer, the tumors that have occurred can undergo chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.
