What's The Filling In Double Glazing?

What's The Filling In Double Glazing?

By Jamie R King

Anyone who has recently installed double glazed windows, will have been asked a lot of questions before they went ahead with their purchase. The most popular question asked is Why there is a gap between the 2 windows of a double glazing unit? The second question is what fills the gap?

In most glazed windows the gap is filled with air. This is standard practice in normal glazing units. The air is dry meaning that the gap is filled with a number of different gases such as helium, oxygen and carbon dioxide. In order for the dry air to work and keep the space between the two panes, the level requires to be less than a third of the usual figures.

A warm edge bar is the best option when deciding on what type of bar to install. This warm edge is often filled in the middle with foam making the frame warmer and less noisier than the traditional metal which feels cold.

The big thing that all glaziers dread at the installation stage is moisture. They try and do everything they can to prevent this from happening. The moisture builds up inside the panes if any air mixes with dry air at the processing point. Glaziers should try and stop this otherwise the window is not fit for installing.

To combat the moisture the fitters use a number of different desiccants to overcome and fix any problems. Oxide and calcium are the most common used gases which the double glazing firms use. The high end firms often use a gas called molecular as they prefer to use this type to make expensive windows.

The more expensive glazing firms opt to use high end materials when making their windows. They consider this to be the best option when designing and fitting their windows.

One of the gases used in this system is argon. The installers like using this type of gas because it is a natural . The most effective type of gas that they can use for filling the gap in new windows.
