Finding A Great Dog For Children

Finding A Great Dog For Children

By Garrett McMahan

The decision to get a dog is definitely a big one and while owning a dog can be one of the best things that you ever do, it is important that you select the right dog for your family. If you have small children, you will want to select a breed of dog particularly suitable for families. Here are a few breeds that you might want to consider.

A dog breed that has high marks as family dogs is the Labrador Retriever. They do not only love children but are also protective of little kids, since they are the gentle giants that are sweet and playful. They are the trainable dogs such that you will see this dog breed used as service dogs, and they are the intelligent dogs easy to train. This dog is the heavy type which requires regular grooming to keep the coat in shape, and they usually weigh from 60 to 75 pounds.

The Golden Retriever is also one breed good for families with children. This is also a playful and gentle dog very patient with children. Their silky coat has to be groomed always and it is also important to know that generally, the large dogs like Labradors and Golden Retrievers live for only 10 to 12 years.

Bulldogs are adorable, and also a nice choice for families as they tend to be quite gentle and full of love. They weigh around 50 pounds, and while they are certainly energetic puppies, they aren't a high energy dog once they reach adulthood. This can be a great choice for a family with a small yard. They live about 8 to 12 years, and can be prone to breathing problems and hip dysplasia, as well. It is important to make sure that your bulldog stays cool in warm weather, as this breed can overheat easily. If you'd like to have a dog like Snoopy in your life, you might consider buying a beagle. This amiable dog is a great option for families. They tend to have fairly long lives, living around 12 to 15 years, and they usually are even-tempered and very good with children.

Other breeds can also be ideal for families, like the Bichon Frise and also Bull Terriers and poodles are also good choices. Mutts are also breeds worth considering. A gentle mutt can be very sweet and also a good choice because mutts have longer lives and also has fewer health problems compared to the pure breed dogs. Certain breeds can be better compared to the others, but it is also the individual dog that has to be considered, whether this is a good match suitable for you and the children.

The proper dog training has to be done, right after you bring the new dog home, and this is no matter what breed you want. You need the dog program that can help you understand the dog's individual personality, and this is the dog program used. This is obedience training for dogs, which include 12 step-by-step lessons on DVD and a workbook and reminder cards, and this is The Dog's Way. You can teach your dogs the basic proper behavior that can help you and the dogs bond with family, and this is the dog training program using dog training DVDs.
