Popular Philadelphia Art Galleries

Popular Philadelphia Art Galleries

By Helen Georgette

Visitors who think that Philadelphia's art scene peaks with Robert Indiana's Love sculpture and the Rocky statue will be happy to understand that the City of Brotherly Love is overflowing with art destinations. American history might be foremost in most people's minds when thinking on the subject of Philadelphia, but the culture that flows through the city is just as wonderful as the Liberty Bell or Independence Hall. A colorful local art community thrives in Philly and the vast number of Philadelphia art galleries available makes their work easily available

First Friday in Philly

Seeded across the city - from the outdoor mosaics of Philadelphia's Magic Gardens to the Picasso's hanging in the Museum of Art - there are galleries in Philadelphia that cater to styles from eclectic to conventional. Many of the galleries are located in the Old Town district and are open for viewing during the popular art events of "First Friday".

Slingluff Gallery

Located in Fishtown and owned by Jonathon Slingluff and his wife Leigh, the Slingluff's offer monthly exhibitions that will range all the way from local street art to modern art from all over the planet. This is undoubtedly one of the more popular Philadelphia art galleries due to the rotating exhibits that appeal to introductory art fans as well as those with a more practiced eye.

Locks Gallery

Occupying a stately 3-story building in Philadelphia's Washington Square, Locks Gallery enjoys a name as among the foremost art galleries in Philadelphia. Utilising its influence in global art circles, the gallery has helped raise the profile of one or two local artists including Jane Irish and Edna Andrade.

The Clay Studio

Part of the Old Town gallery district, The Clay Studio was opened to give new artists a place to work and display their creations. It has since then turned into the best spot in Philadelphia to see and purchase unique arts. Together with the gallery and store, The Clay Studio also offers classes for those that want to develop their own artistic talent.

Schmidt-Dean

For over 25 years Christopher Schmidt has been exhibiting his art and that of others from his Chestnut Street gallery. A former "Best of Philly" winner, Schmidt exhibits a good range of work including photography, painting and sculpture, mostly by local artists.

Biello Martin Studio

Michael Biello and Dan Martin, together with architectural designer Carlo Fiammenghi have banded together to bring one of the most eclectic art spaces in the country to Philadelphia. This Old Town studio/gallery conjures up the salon atmosphere of Europe, where works of all mediums are on view.
