The Main Materials Used In Blinds

The Main Materials Used In Blinds

By Georgia Browne

Shades or blinds are used for both windows and doors. They are very useful when it comes to creating privacy in both buildings and cars. They have many other functions that include the improvement of aesthetic appearance and the regulation of temperature. In choosing the most appropriate shade, there are a number of factors that should be considered. These include their exact purpose, personal preferences and the price and quality of the chosen material.

There are many different designs of shades that exist. These include roller blinds, shutters, vertical and horizontal shades and the honeycomb shade. The vertical shade is closed into place by a rotatory motion. This makes the fabric to overlap onto itself. The horizontal one is suspended on a slender, ladder-like system and adjusted by use of a pull string. Slightly longer slats are used in the vertical designs so that the fabric stacks together on a common side.

The commonly used materials are fabric, wood, metal and plastic. Each of these materials has its own advantages and disadvantages. Among the oldest and commonly used types of shades are vinyl blinds. Vinyl is affordable for most people. It is also simple to handle and maintain. A wet cloth or a duster can suffice in dusting this kind of window covers as opposed to other materials that require special equipment to clean.

Persian windows are another hugely preferred type. They are made of either vinyl or metal. They also come as either vertical or horizontal designs. In the horizontal plane, they can be rotated through 170 degrees. Almost the same range of movement can be achieved for the vertical designs. This makes them very good in regulating temperature and entry of light.

Venetian blinds are horizontal slats made of metal, plastic or wood. These slats can be able to be stacked on top of one another. This feature enables them to be rotated through one hundred and eighty degrees simultaneously, once they have all been suspended with tape. This type also employs the use of lift cords. The Venetian shades are unsuitable for use in areas such as bathrooms as they can easily get into contact with water. In these areas, other alternatives can be considered.

Shades serve the same function as curtains but are more efficient. They are also more durable if the right material is selected. The fact that they can achieve very firm closure is proof that they are the better choice when privacy is a priority. In winter and summer, they are very useful in helping regulate the ambient temperatures in the room.

Regular cleaning is essential in the maintenance of blinds. The methods used range from simple ones to more sophisticated ones. This depends on the type of material. Aluminium shades are typically cleaned using high sound waves. Other types of shades may be cleaned by use of simple wet cloth. Wet cloth should be avoided in wooden shades to avoid damage. Excessive dust can be reduced using a static duster with charge.

The use of shades may bring some disadvantages with it. The corded blinds are in particular a safety hazard for young children. They may cause strangulation in the young ones who are not being watched by an adult. In such as case, it is wise to use retrofit kits to minimise this risk. The other alternative is to use cordless window coverings.
