How To Get A Colorado Motorcycle License

How To Get A Colorado Motorcycle License

By Amanda Baird

Getting a Colorado motorcycle license is the first step towards enjoying the great plains and bike riding terrains in the state. In order to get this type of driving permit, applicants must first have regular driving licenses from the state. If you have any type of two or three-wheeled vehicle, you need to get a suitable permit before you can hit the road. Read on for more information on motorbike driving permits.

Different types of applicants must satisfy different requirements before they can get an endorsement. For instance, the requirements for under 18's are more strict than those for over 21's. Generally, the more experienced a driver is, the less strict the requirements will be.

The state no longer issues motorbike licenses as it used to. Nowadays, applicants are required to have an existing Colorado drivers license before they can seek a motorcycle endorsement. In case of underage drivers, applicants must have held an instruction permit for over 12 months before applying for the motorbike permit.

Since there are different types of motorbikes, the state issues two types of endorsements; M and 3. The M endorsement allows the driver to operate any type of two wheeled vehicle. The latter only allows the driver to ride three-wheeled vehicles. It is important for applicants to know the difference between these endorsements to ensure that they apply for the right one.

Before applying for a motorbike permit, you need to visit the local DMV office and do a written motorcycle test. Thereafter, you need to pay fourteen dollars for an instruction permit. You will then need to pass a motorbike driving test. If you pass these tests, you will be required to purchase a new driving permit that has a motorcycle endorsement. The fees are 23 and 37 dollars for regular and CDL licenses respectively.

Applicants can purchase new licenses that have motorbike endorsements if they present an MSF certificate at the DMV. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has a rigorous training program for those who wish to learn how to safely ride a motorbike. It is safe to say that riding a two-wheeler is more dangerous than driving a four-wheeled motor vehicle. Therefore, proper training is important. Whether you go through the DMV tests or the MSF program, the fees for purchasing the permit are still the same.

Before the DMV can give an endorsement, it must administer a test to assess the skills of the applicant. The good news is that applicants do not need to visit DMV offices to take these tests. They can be tested by third party testers nearby. If you are looking for a convenient way to get your endorsement, you can just find a third party tester and do the test.

If you have a scooter or moped, you do not need to get a Colorado motorcycle license in order to use them. These motorbikes do not have any clutch so they do not fall in the same group as other clutched motorbikes. That said, it is important for people to know the different classifications of motorbikes before they apply for a license. This will help to ensure that they get the right permit.
