Tumor Research & Connections To Baseball

Tumor Research & Connections To Baseball

By Rob Sutter

Up until recently, I don't think anyone would have been able to make such a connection. For fans of the sport, you have probably learned about how Darren Daulton, a former Philadelphia Phillies catcher, was diagnosed with cancer. However, this is not the only case and it's probably one of the interesting that I have come across in terms of tumor research. This being said, is it possible that these cases are connected or is it a matter of one coincidence occurring after another?

A written piece on TIME.com talked about how Daulton had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, which is considered to be the most aggressive growth in tumor research. Any authority on the matter, Voices against Brain Cancer included, would be able to tell you the same. There have been other names in the sport as well who have passed away because of this condition, Gary Carter and Ken Brett just to name a few. Each of these men had played catcher in their time, which is something to consider.

Anyone who follows sports on a regular basis will be able to tell you just how public steroids have become. These are some of the most common in baseball and football especially, though the story of defensive lineman Lyle Alzado is worth noting. After passing away in 1992 due to brain lymphoma, you can imagine that the story gained attention as well. It might not have been the same as glioblastoma on the part of Daulton but it is an interesting case either way, if you ask me.

Is it possible that these factors are connected to this cancer type in some way or another? I think that it's a possibility but you have to keep in mind that no one knows where exactly this type of cancer comes about from. We do not exactly know why this condition is seen individuals, so maybe there is evidence that said factors can be linked together. I believe that we'll find better results and that we will be able to make better conclusions as to where this condition stems from.

When you get down to it, I think that this is a matter of the condition occurring as you become older. Daulton had been a retired ball player for a number of years, so it is fair to assume that the condition came about as a result. Glioblastoma is a condition which impacts many Americans, around 18,000 for those who want more solid statistics. Tumor research is going to be done constantly, though, which gives me hope that there will be results which can be utilized in the long run.
