When you are shopping for a repair shop, take into consideration whether they have worked on the same type of car as yours. If the answer is yes, that's a very good thing.

Consider using OEM parts. These parts are the genuine article, produced by your car's original manufacturer. Generic parts can be cheaper but OEM parts will last longer and usually come with a better warranty. Getting a good deal on generic parts means you might have to purchase the same parts again and pay a mechanic to change them within the next few years.

Your repair person should be upfront and honest with you. If they talk to you in circles or they don't pay attention to your questions, you may not be dealing with the best person. You should feel like you can trust them, so don't fear seeing someone else.

Ask if your intended mechanic is experienced with the make and model of your car. Basic components are usually the same, but there are big differences in different types of cars. If you are unsure, pay the extra to have a dealer do the repairs.

Figure out what repairs and labor are going to cost you before handing your keys over. A lot of places will put rates in the fine print and so you need to read over any paperwork carefully. It is crucial that you understand exactly how you will be billed for repairs. Some shops have the repair times established by certain manufacturers. Some "Minor" repairs could take all day if they go by those manufacturers' established times.
