All About Picking The Correct Outdoor Water Fountains For A Yard

By Dawn Williams

All outdoor water fountains are not created equal. Still waters like those you find in simple birdbaths, ponds and other small containers often provide a profound sense of peace and reflection. Fountains have something a pond does not, movement, action and sound. These three things help people to focus their mind to see the greater picture of things going on around them. They also provide a focal point for objects surrounding them.

There are commonly three contrasting types of outside fountains which people purchase. A bubbling or cascading type is where water flows up through the container and runs down off the sides. A spill over fountain has the water-flow running out some type of spout before falling into a container or a basin. A jet type has the liquid forced up under medium pressure forming a jet and then falls in a thick stream.

There is a sub-type called the disappearing fountain as well. With these the liquid goes into the catch basin than it spills over the side into the ground which is often covered by different sized stones and appears to vanish. In truth is going into a small container that is underground before it is pumped back to the top outlet again, after which it spills back down over the side. All fountain types may be converted into this popular sub-type.

The most versatile or generally the most suitable for many people's lawn garden is a cascading or bubbling fountain. They typically have a primary fluid source placed somewhere underneath the surface of the primary container. These are generally made using glazed pots. This liquid will softly bubble over the surface and flow over the edge to a lower basin. They are best for small areas and often will make gurgling soft sounds.

With most spilling fountains the top basin is raised and a little smaller than bottom basin this makes the waterfall make more noise. You should try listening to some before deciding to purchase this type. The louder sound could be energizing for most people so they are generally best put in areas where they are conversation pieces.

Most jet fountains are ideal for big spaces where the sound is not distorted and will be heard from great distances. The stronger jetting makes these are very dramatic and quite inspirational to look at. There are also some small simpler ones which may be put in areas that are small that has jet smaller droplets for creating the same effect.

All of these designs have something in common, choosing which one comes down to personal preferences. Look at what area it is going to be located in and what effect you are trying to make. There is no wrong style, it is just some will go in a place better than others would.

Most fine quality built outdoor water fountains will be something that can entertain and relax your family for years to come. If you do find them to costly there are several ways to home build a water feature that will often look as nice as one bought in the store. You could always just search the net and find numerous tutorials on building them.
