Modern science has advanced the ability of medical doctors to diagnose and treat diseases and illnesses. However, there are numerous shortcomings and the cost of health care is very high. Alternative healing modalities refer to the practices performed to achieve proper health without the use of surgery, medications or chemicals. These practices are believed to possess healing effects but the evidence of these properties is not scientifically proven.

It consists of a wide range of therapies, products, health care practices, diagnoses and treatments. It is used together with conventional medical treatment. They include biological based approaches, alternative medical systems, mind body therapies, joint and muscle manipulation and energy therapies. These modalities are divided into various groups. This classification is based on the source of healing effects. In cases, these modalities overlap with each other in the course of treatment. The five main categories include divine healing, spiritual, magnetic, energy or vibrational, mental or psychic healing. These can be further split into smaller groups.

Most energy therapies that are used have the ability to influence the energy fields found in the body. These energy fields surround and penetrate the body. There are a number of things used in this technique. These include crystals, magnets and electric fields. Examples of body based therapies are massage, chiropractic and osteopathy. These techniques use physical manipulation and the movement of various joints and muscles.

Mind body therapies are based on the fact that the mind can influence the symptoms and the functions of various parts of the body. Examples include guided imagery, spirituality, yoga, relaxation, meditation, hypnotherapy among others. They focus on improving the health of the entire body. This is because some of these therapies involve the mind, body and soul. The mind is used to influence other areas of the body.

Biological approaches involve the use of special diets, herbal medicines and high doses of vitamins. Generally, substance based practices rely on certain substances that are found in nature such as foods, herbs, megavitamin, supplements and minerals. It includes traditional herbal remedies that vary from one region to another. It may also include the use of non-herbal toxic chemicals derived from non-biological sources. Some non-vitamin substances that used for healing purposes include omega-3 fatty acid, fish oil and glucosamine.

Most of these treatments are preventive in nature. They help to boost the immunity of the body, increase vitality and eliminate limiting beliefs and unhealthy habits that lead to disease and illness. It is a fulfilling experience to get rid of hidden obstacles that prevent individuals from enjoying the benefits of good health. It is important to gather adequate information about the treatment process before making the decision to participate in any program.

There are a number of benefits associated with alternative healing modalities. This approach emphasizes on creating a positive life style that includes stress relief, relaxation and avoiding destructive vices such as drug abuse, smoking, alcohol to promote natural health. It helps to reduce the cost of health care by eliminating the need for costly prescription medication. Using these alternatives gives individuals an opportunity to be proactive in taking care of their own health. It helps individuals to avoid using antibiotics which can affect the immune system.
