Despite the fact that pediculosis of head lice infestation is not serious and not life-threatening, this condition may be irritating and annoying to the infested person especially that symptom of having them includes having an itchy scalp and appearance of small red bumps into the scalp. These symptoms occur because head lice feed on human blood directly from the scalp of the person that serves as their host. Head lice also can spread quickly and cross-contamination can occur if a non-infested person borrows or uses infested persons things that come in contact with their hair and scalp like scarves, cap, hat and hair comb. Head lice are also able to lay eggs into your hair shaft and they are known as nits. These nits can sometimes be confused as a dandruff flake because they are oval in shape and the color is usually white to yellowish. However, unlike dandruffs, you cannot easily remove nits from your hair shaft because they strongly cling into the hair strands.

Olive oil has been one of the most used kinds of oil as home treatment for head lice infestation for many years. Aside from being easy to find, olive oil is also proven effective to eliminate head lice from the head just as long as it is applied regularly and properly. First thing that should be done in order to start your olive oil treatment is to apply olive oil to the head and scalp while simultaneously massaging it. Once applied, you will keep it in your hair and do not rinse it overnight. Instead, tightly cover your hair with a plastic bag or shower cap. In the morning, use your regular shampoo to rinse off the olive oil. If you feel that the olive oil is not completely removed, you can wash and rinse again with the use of apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar not only helps to remove oil but it also helps to dissolve the gluey substance that aids the nits to stick to your hair. Once you have rinse and wash off with the use of apple cider vinegar, nits will be then removed easily.

While your hair is still wet, make use of an ordinary comb to comb your hair and remove tangles. Then using the same comb, divide your hair into sections. After that, you can then make use of the head lice comb to remove dead lice and nits from your hair shaft and hair. The success of eliminating head lice from your scalp depends on your ability to do the process of olive oil application regularly until your head is completely free from head lice and nits.

Using olive oil to remove head lice and nits can be time consuming since it requires you to do it regularly and successively to ensure that head lice and nits will be eliminated and removed from your head.

Nowadays, a lot of different products to kill and remove head lice are readily available but the use of olive oil is still considered as the safest way to remove head lice and nits especially for children. This method also is cheaper since the ingredients that you need are usually found in every kitchen.
