Why hire a skip?

Why hire a skip?

By Gerard Klein

House clearance firm or DIY?

If you are selling or renovating a house, it is inevitable that there will be a lot of unwanted material (old carpets, broken furniture and so on) which you need to get rid of. The usual household facilities for refuse disposal and recycling are not going to be adequate for this quantity, so you are faced with two choices; to engage a firm specialising in house clearance, who will take charge of the whole operation, or alternatively to hire a skip and do the job yourself, which is cheaper.

Getting a skip

Skip hire companies are easy to find. There will be several in your local telephone directory, and you can probably get a recommendation from friends and neighbours. Alternatively, you can make all the arrangements on the internet; there are national as well as regional and local firms. You may find that prices vary, and you will need to use your judgement about the cheapest quotes.

Can anybody get a skip?

You need to ensure that there is room in front of the house, and on the access road, to accommodate both the skip (which is large and heavy) and the big lorry which will deliver it and take it away. If space is restricted, you may be able to arrange for a smaller skip.

Skips and the law

It is best to put the skip on your own property if possible, but if there is no room it is quite usual for it to be positioned on the road outside. This requires a permit from the local council, but the procedure for applying is not complicated, and the skip firm may be prepared to do it for you.

What goes in the skip?

There are certain items - electrical items, solvents, tyres, asbestos, and other hazardous materials - that are not permitted in skips. The skip company will supply a list. You will need to make other arrangements for waste of this kind.

What are the disadvantages of skip hire?

Whilst a house clearance service will do all the carrying and loading, the manual labour involved in filling a skip is done by the hirer, and you can expect some heavy and messy work. Also, if your skip is accessible to the neighbours, it's possible that some will see it as an opportunity to get rid of their own rubbish, or even a chance to salvage some of your former possessions.

What happens to the skip?

When the skip returns to the depot, the contents are sorted carefully and recycled wherever possible. As much as ninety per cent of the waste material is kept away from landfill, which is a much higher proportion than householders can usually manage with domestic recycling. For this reason skip hire can be seen as an ecologically sound way of disposing of unwanted items.

After the skip has gone

The skip hire company is responsible for cleaning up the site and leaving things as they were before. If all has happened as it should, you should have an empty house and a tidy garden.
