Nothing is as good as laying on a sofa while playing your video games or watching tv with some friends and family. The main problem is that just like most things, sofas will wear out over time. The best fix for this problem is finding replacement leather cushions, though cushion foam which fixes them works too. Finding just the right foam can be the difference from the sofa everybody fights to sit on to the sofa that only sits and collects dust.

Most cushions which contain foam will have four distinct components. The center component is the core which is generally constructed using open cell foams. Around that is generally a thin layer of 1 or 2 inch batting which helps provide softness and will make it seem rounder. This will often be glued on to ensure it will not slide around inside a cushion.

Around this is generally a thin layer of fabric which protects the inside layers from different contaminates. The outermost layer is generally made of the fabric, vinyl or leather that goes around everything and holds the shape of the cushion. Not all cushions are the same but generally this is the breakdown for most of them.

When picking the correct kind of foam for using it is important to understand the various types you can buy. Understand what items you will be using it on and the properties which are important for your application. There are numerous fillers that can used for new or old repairs that will also have varying characteristics.

Compressed polyester is not really foam instead it is a dense polyester batting which is generally used as a soft foam alternative for some applications. It will not break down and yellow over time like many foams. It also lets water pass through it quite easily and will dry easily afterwards. It can compress after long term use, though it can be easily fluffed back up.

Polyester fiberfill is like compressed polyester only shredded or blown fibers that are not matted together. This is one of the most inexpensive options some one can choose to use. It is often used for pillows, pillow tops and deep bottom or back cushions. It is resistant to moisture and non-allergenic as well as machine washable. All these options make it a versatile choice.

Treated polyurethane foams are also getting used on more new items. It is typically treated with a form of biocide wash to help it be mildew resistant and to last longer. This is vital for any items that may come into contact with various liquids like soda pop and water. It is generally recommended that any fill material is wrapped with light plastic so it is protected from liquids.

After choosing the foam to use on your replacement leather cushions, remember to wrap it with a protective covering to ensure it will last. Common choices for material are light plastic, silk and cotton fabric. Whatever you decide to go with, remember there are always different companies that are happy to fix it for you for a small price.
