Interesting Uses For Hog Waste

Interesting Uses For Hog Waste

By Lianne Derocco

Hog waste is dirty, with foul odor, and is an annoyance to people, but is a part of hog farming that cannot be avoided. However, hog waste can also be of help to people in some ways. Hog waste can produce electricity, and there is a process to do this. Hog waste is contained and methane gas is produced in the process, and thus is used to power the generators that produce the electricity. Hog waste also can be used as fertilizers, and thus can give savings to farm producers.

When it comes to fertilizer, swine waste must be liquefied and then it can be used on the crops. It enriches the nutrient value of the soil, which generally means that you will yield better crops. Using hog waste, as opposed to chemicals, is definitely a more environmentally friendly way to fertilize and also can be quite cost effective.

Hog waste also can produce synthetic crude oil, like waste excreted by other animals, and there is an ongoing scientific study to do this. In the U.S., there is a research study that breaks down the carbohydrate materials in the liquefied waste and turns these into synthetic crude oil, using heat and pressure. Scientists claim that the scientific project is still in its infancy stage but is with a bright future. The synthetic crude oil produced can be a good source of fuel while also help solve the problems of hog producers with their hog wastes.

The swine waste in the farms can also be used as binder for asphalt, which is used to make roads. While a petroleum binder can be used, the binders made from hog waste are much less expensive, so this is a big plus. These are more eco-friendly binding materials that can reduce the overall costs associated with the paving of our roads and highways.

Of course, hog waste management is an extremely important part of the job for swine farmers. The hog waste lagoons should be fully contained because a leak can produce catastrophic effects and sources of pollutants to the groundwater. Hog waste lagoons and waste pits also should be treated and liquefied, so that there will be no solid build up on the bottom or crust at the top. Reducing these two problems also reduces problems such as foaming, odors and flies.

These problems can be solved however, with natural agricultural waste products available that can help producers with their problems. Products that have natural bacteria that eat away the solid waste formations are these products, and these include products such as Agra Sphere and Lagoon Agra Sphere. Prevention of sludge and crust formations and also eliminating foam formation are objectives, and these are the products that can eat away at solid waste. In addition to liquefying waste, the bacteria in these agricultural waste products also improves the value of the nutrients in the waste, which improves the quality for fertilizers.
