Pros Of Artificial Insemination And The Procedures Employed

By Margaret Jourdan

The term artificial insemination is used to refer to the process whereby sperms are launched into the reproductive system of females by any other means other than sexually. There are many ways of making this possible. The procedures involved are costly and have not so impressive odds of success. Generally, the rate of success of artificial insemination is low, roughly 25 percent. This requires that those involved consider all the factors that would help in improving the figure.

The two most common methods used for AI are intracervical and intrauterine. Intracervical procedure is more common and is best suited for people that are single, gay and lesbian couples and also couples with no reproductive problems but whose male partner could be having complications with ejaculation during coitus. The procedure is not only painless but also quick and involves direct placement of sperms into the cervix. From there, they can swim into the fallopian tube and naturally fertilize the egg.

The second option, the intrauterine one, is a bit uncomfortable. It at times leads to cramping. It involves implanting sperms directly into the womb, bypassing the cervix. With this method, the chances of fertilization are increased. It is used together with fertility drugs for more efficiency. The timing of ovulation is very important. It is the best option for people with reproductive problems like cervical mucus or low sperm count.

Artificial insemination can be done using sperms from a partner or from donors. Sperm banks are the best option for most women that decide to go for the donor option. Such details about the donor as height, weight, eye color are given to the woman before a decision is reached on which one they want to use.

Upon choosing the most suitable sperms, they are supposed to be purchased. This is followed by a process of washing that is done to select only the healthiest sperms and the most mobile. The rest are discarded. They are then shipped to the clinics where the procedure will be performed. Sperms taken from sperm banks are tested for virility and diseases and washed. One is also sure that those that donated them signed away any parental rights over the resulting children.

On average, the procedure costs something in the range of hundreds of thousands of dollars for every cycle. The price is not constant and could increase depending on several factors. For instance, if fertility medications and ultrasound are needed, one is likely to pay more. Prices will also depend on the clinic and their geographical location. There are insurance covers that cater for the entire cost.

There are times when the whole procedure is done in one hour or less. The use of fertility drugs however requires that one takes them for one week before ovulation. Approximately 3 or six cycles will be needed before conception takes place.

To increase the odds with artificial insemination, there are important tips. Men ought not to have sex before undergoing the procedure to ensure there are a high number of the healthiest sperms. Men with normal sperm count will need to wait for 24 hours, while those with low sperm count have a waiting period of up to 72 hours. Women need to eat foods rich in protein and low in salt and potassium.
