If you are living in a house there are many things that can negatively affect your home. One of the most frustrating things to deal with is a flooded basement. This is because water in your basement can affect so many different areas of your home. If you are dealing with this issue, here are some steps you can take to make the process easier and less stressful.

When people think of flooding in a home's basement, they may think that just because their home sits high and dry that this will not end up being an issue that they have to deal with. This is not the case however. The fact is that there are many reasons why you may end up with more water than you like in your home.

While the visible damage to items and furniture is the most obvious problem you may be dealing with, there are other issues which you need to keep in mind. Some of the water will soak into flooring and walls. It can damage drywall, carpets and other flooring. If it is not dealt with properly, mold and rot can set in which can cause big problems down the road.

One common cause is a burst pipe. You may also find yourself dealing with excess water if you have been experiencing heavy rainfall. Still other people may find that their hot water tank has ruptured and that water has flowed from it into their basement. If you are lucky, you are dealing with clean water although this is not always the case.

You need to know what the source of the flood is. This will give you an idea of how to minimize the water infiltration or even stop it as quickly as possible. You can always turn off main switches to the house should a pipe burst. You can also turn off the supply to a water tank in order to stop a flood from getting worse.

Calling your insurance company should be the next step. You need to know how they want you to handle the situation. You should also ask them if there are specific restoration companies they work with as this may make it easier for you to get payment issued when the restoration process is taking place. Keep in mind that this can be a very lengthy process.

Your insurance agent will likely send someone to assess the damage. This is where having a documented list of items that were damaged and their value can be helpful. You should also ask for names of restoration specialists that your insurance company works with. This may make it easier to get payment for any restoration work that takes place and may end up cutting down on any problems from your insurance agent.

Having a flood in your basement can be extremely stressful. If you follow the steps listed in this article; chances are you should find that you can get your home cleaned properly and get your life back to normal as quickly as possible
