Molds are microorganisms, which are categorized as fungi. There are many different types of molds and they normally grow on decaying matter and soil. They are important because they degrade plant matter in the environment. They can however be harmful if they thrive in your house. When people are exposed to molds, they can suffer from sinus infections, skin rashes, respiratory problems, asthma and allergies. In extreme cases, death can occur. The main factor that contributes to mold infestations is excessive humidity or moisture. This can be the result of spills or burst plumbing. Molds can also infest a property due to leaking pipes, leaking roofs and wet or flooded basements.

Most homeowners worry that their insurance policy will not cover the cost of removing molds. The reason for this is that homeowners insurance provides coverage for certain kinds of water damage only. Standard policies do not cover water damage that occurs because of negligence. For example, if a home has a leaking downspout that is spilling water into the property and it is not rectified, an insurance policy will not pay for the damage caused by molds.

If a certain type of water related accident like a burst pipe caused your property to flood, the cost of mold removal can be covered by your policy. Before filing a claim, it is important to read your insurance policy to see what is covered and what is not. After this, you should inform your insurer about the damage and be prepared to answer various questions about the problem.

The insurance company will carry out investigations about your claim a few days after receiving it. It may also ask you to provide it with additional information about the damage. The firm will either reject or accept your claim. If it accepts your claim, you can receive the funds within 5 business days. If the claim is not accepted, you will receive a letter explaining the reason why it was declined.

If the area covered by the molds growing in your home is less than 10 square feet, it is possible to clean the area yourself. Prior to cleaning the area, you should put on protective gear such as a respirator, gloves and goggles. If the molds are growing on a hard surface, you can remove them by scrubbing the area with a multi purpose cleaner or water and detergent.

Once you are through, you should dry the surface thoroughly. If you have removed molds from a porous material, it is advisable to seal the material in a plastic bag prior to disposing it. Once you have cleaned the area, you should revisit the site regularly and look for signs of additional damage or new growth of molds.

If the moldy area is very large, property owners should enlist the services of a home restoration contractor to help them remove it. The contractor will utilize industrial cleaning supplies and equipment to remove the molds. After removal, the contractor will treat the infested area in order to prevent future infestation.
