Guide To Replacement Water Heaters

Guide To Replacement Water Heaters

By Brian Winters

Saying good-bye to an old water heater can be difficult, especially if you were attached to it for a long time. However, buying a replacement heater is inevitable since all heating systems don't last forever. If you think your water heater is reaching the end of its lifespan, consider buying a replacement unit to avoid inconvenience. Since it is expensive to perform large-scale repairs, you might as well buy a replacement instead.

It is important to do your research and look for different types of water heater available in the market. You may end up spending too much money on repairs if you buy a heater that won't meet your hot water needs. It is recommended to buy a heater with a large storage tank if you have a big family.

Conserve energy by buying a tankless water heater. This unit heats water on demand without having to insulate water at all times. Experts recommend using this kind of unit since they last longer than conventional tank-style units.

To conserve energy, some homeowners prefer to use solar water heaters. However, these kinds of units require an electrical or fuel backup during winter seasons and have high upfront costs. Do not expect much from a solar heater since they operate with low heating efficiency. Freeze protection and overheating are needed to keep it running smoothly.

Installing a recirculating system is also an option. This system has a pump that is responsible for pushing hot water out of the tap while the cold water is sent back to the tank. Just like a tankless unit, it only heats water when necessary.

Look for the Energy Guide label to know the unit's first hour rating. The FHR will indicate how much warm water it produces during its peak demand. Reading the label will help you get an idea how efficient the unit operates without causing your electric bill to soar.

It is recommended to replace your water heater right before your old unit breaks down. This will give you more time to look and shop for a unit that will meet your hot water needs. Buying a unit haphazardly can lead to costly water heater repairs in the long run. Set your budget and consider the tank size if applicable.

When unsure, you can always contact a specialist for help. Ask for advice what kind of water heater will be suitable for your household. Make sure to have the unit installed properly to protect your family from unfortunate accidents.
