Tips On How To Make A Handicapped Bathroom

Tips On How To Make A Handicapped Bathroom

By Essie Craft

Most homes do not have any provisions in place to cater for the needs of handicaps. Whether it is the entrance to the home or basic utilities such as kitchen and bathrooms, there are slight differences in ordinary designs for normal people and those for persons with disabilities. That is why you need special designs when making a handicapped bathroom.

Assuming that a person with handicaps uses the wheelchair, it is important to start by providing room for the chair and making sure it can easily move around without anyone having to help. If you do this, you can all have an easy time because the victim can easily do most of their things without asking for help.

There are many things you may have to change if one of your family members is unable to walk on their own. Having to move around on a wheelchair is a big challenge. The designs of many homes and structures do not consider the plight of such persons. If your home did not consider the needs of such persons, you must make changes to adjust.

Even as you make all these changes, you also need to consider other users. If you have a big house with many baths, you can easily transform one to conform to the needs of the handicapped person. If you do not have this option however, you can still make changes to have the baths serve both normal and disabled persons. There are ways of increasing the heights of toilet seats when necessary.

The doors to the bathrooms often have a slight barrier to keep the water from running out to the rest of the house. The first step you should take when you design a bath for persons with handicaps is to make sure the floor is level. That way, the wheelchair can easily get in and out of the bath without any problems. If the victim can easily get around without help, the entire household will have an easy time.

If you make such changes, the victim can easily move around the home even on their own. This means you can have freedom to do other things without constantly worrying about the plight of the person with a disability in your family. Grab bars within the bath are very important because they help anyone have a firm grip if necessary.

With the grab bars within easy reach, the victim can easily lift themselves out of the chair and the toilet seat without any help. This will give them independence which is important for their development in life. You also need to bring down the bath sinks to a lower level so that the people with handicap can reach them while seating on the chair.

A good handicapped bathroom should have floors that are not slippery. This can prevent accidents within the area. For a person with disability to move freely within the room, you should make sure you buy water-resistant wheelchair that they can use even when in the shower.

  3. I believe that it is not so necessary to design a bathroom for people with disabilities. You can, for example, use a shower chair (the best on the market you can see here http://www.bestshowerchairs.com/). But some of your advice is very welcome.
