When Should You Rent Tools For Home Improvement Tasks

When Should You Rent Tools For Home Improvement Tasks

By Denise Jackson

Homeowners enjoy the benefit of being able to take on home improvement projects. Many enjoy the sense of accomplishment these jobs bring. In order to make these improvements successfully, one should have the correct tools. Here are some tips to help you to choose the time to buy tools and when you should rent them.

A basic toolkit should be a part of every household, whether one rents or owns the property. The kit should have a few hand tools as the bare minimum so one can make small repairs or complete other projects. For example, one will want to have a tape measure, adjustable wrench, utility knife, pliers, screwdrivers and a hammer. In addition, homeowners may want to consider buying locking pliers, saws, socket sets and a cordless drill.

Fortunately, it is possible to collect these tools over time. Always choose quality tools, even though they may be more expensive. Junky tool sets may be cheap, but they often do not last long and can cause damage to the project if they break.

You will sometimes need specialty tools. Installing hardwood flooring or drywall can require special tools most people do not have in their toolboxes. It is often more economical to rent these tools than to buy them.

Big fans of DIY projects may find some of the more expensive tools better to own. Portable table saws are affordable and can be stored in a small space. Those who do a lot of woodworking projects may find it less expensive to own their own saw. However, for a one time project, where the individual will not foresee using the tool again anytime in the near future, rental is often the better choice.

One might consider a cost analysis in determining whether to rent or buy. Be objective and realistic as to how often the tool will be actually used. Divide the cost of the tool by the number of uses to determine cost. However, renting may be a better choice even when more expensive if storage of the tool in a secure location is a problem.

Home improvement can be satisfying both emotionally and financially. However, homeowners will need the right tools. Many of them can be found in a basic toolbox, but others should be rented for the particular job. Having the right tools can help to ensure a professional looking project that increases the value of a house.
