Home Treatment For Head Lice

Head lice are small brown or gray, wingless, six-legged parasites that lives on the human scalp and feeds on human blood. Pediculosis or head lice infestation involves this annoying and irritating parasites and the age that is most affected by this kind of infestation are those below 12 years of age and preschool and elementary years. This kind of infestation is easy to spread especially in children that are fond of borrowing other children's things like cap, hat, scarf or hair comb which can harbor head lice. Using these things provides opportunity for head lice to transfer from one host to another therefore spreading contamination.

Head lice infestation can become annoying and irritating even if it is not a life threatening or serious condition. Annoying since a person that is infested with head lice may tend to scratch his head often due to persistent itching caused by the head lice not only in the head but as well as in the back of the neck and ears. Other people who have head lice infestation may also not show symptoms of it. Head lice infestation does not mean that a person has poor personal hygiene because head lice live on clean hair.

"Nits" are eggs of head lice and they usually appear as oval in shape and white to yellowish in color. Usually mistaken as dandruff, nits and dandruff are not similar because nits are harder to remove since they are attached to the hair shaft. Here are some useful tips on some home treatments and remedies to remove head lice:

-One of the simplest tool or way to remove head lice is with the use of a lice comb which is available to be purchased in most medical stores. Aside from being affordable, using a lice comb is also one of the most effective home treatments for head lice.

-Another home treatment for head lice is with the use of your regular shampoo with some added ingredients. Additional things to add are one teaspoon of tea tree oil, a teaspoon of eucalyptus oil and three tablespoons of olive oil. Once the mixture has been combined well you can apply it to your hair and scalp and leave on for 30minutes while covering with a plastic shower cap. After 30 minutes you can proceed with rinsing your hair.

-Use of mayonnaise as home treatment for head lice has been practiced for many years already. You can use mayonnaise to treat head lice by simply applying it to your scalp at night and cover your head with a shower cap and sleep with the shower cap on. You can rinse the mayonnaise in the morning using your regular shampoo. Checking your hair regularly is recommended to monitor if there are still remaining head lice living in your head.

-Another home treatment for head lice is with the use of petroleum jelly. Application of petroleum jelly is similar with the application of mayonnaise to the hair and scalp. Use of petroleum jelly will help you to loosen lice and nits from your hair however petroleum jelly can provide greasiness to the hair that sometimes is hard to remove. If your regular shampoo is not able to remove the greasiness caused by petroleum jelly, you can try to use a dishwashing detergent to do so.
