Tips On Dog Training In Pa

By Kate McMahon

Imagining life without dogs is an impossibility for many people. They are admired for their zest for life, unconditional affection and loyalty. That aside, it should be understood that dogs differ from people in many ways. Their ability to learn is not as fast as that of humans. They have to be taught essential skills so that they live peacefully with humans. Dog training in pa is effectively done with certain considerations in mind.

Irrespective of the method used, effective training boils down to one aspect- controlling consequences of their behavior. In influencing how dogs behave, there are two important things to put into consideration. First and foremost, desirable behaviors need to be rewarded. Secondly, there should not be any rewards for behaviors that are undesirable. This mode of training is referred to as reward based learning. The lack of reward is not a punishment as such, but a way of discouragement.

Understanding how the dog learns is crucial. Whereas some masters may think their dogs just would not listen, this is not necessarily the case. It should be understood that as animals, they face challenges and would not instantly grasp what they are being taught. It needs some time.

For clear and consistent communication with dogs, one needs to understand how they learn. They tend to learn through immediate outcomes of their behavior. The nature of such consequences will greatly determine how they behave in future. As is expected, they work to avoid bad things and get the good ones. This is why they tend to appreciate behavior that rewards them and detest behavior that comes with unpleasant consequences.

On the same note, consequences for behavior that is undesirable must be instant. This is because unlike human beings, dogs live in the present and would not easily differentiate experiences that are separated in time. This is just like good behavior that is rewarded immediately. The advantage of this form of reward and lack of it is that the dog easily remembers what is required of them. For purposes of uniformity and consistency, every family member should take part in this form of training.

To effectively teach new skills, training sessions would need to be not only short but also lively. Dogs have a very short attention spans and thus subjecting them to lengthy sessions would do more harm than good. 15 minutes per session is the recommended time. This time is sufficient to work on a single skill or several skills depending on the individual and the dog as well. Whatever skill is taught needs to be repeated some 5 to 15 times for it to stick and to make the training interesting.

The body language of dogs, more so their ears and eyes, need to be understood if training is to be done effectively. Such actions as tilting of their heads, wagging of their tails and movement of their legs are indications of their impulses and emotions. They are illustrative of the message being sent. Their barks and noises are also an interpretation of their feelings.

Dog training in pa requires a lot of patience. This coupled with consistency, are the recipes for enjoyable learning. Almost all dogs have different learning abilities and the sooner people understand that, the better and more effective the learning will become. Dogs are able to learn so much.
