Social Media Networking & Its Potential Impact On Total Divas

Social Media Networking & Its Potential Impact On Total Divas

By Rob Sutter

When you're a fan of professional wrestling, it's not uncommon for you to hear about how "fake" it all is. I've received quite a bit of this during my time as a fan and I've oftentimes offered the rebuttal that reality TV can be considered just as legitimate a form of entertainment, if not a little less so. With the premiere of "Total Divas" having aired rather recently, is it possible that the wrong audience is being targeted? This is where I feel as though social media networking can come in.

E! has hosted a number of television shows and "Total Divas" happens to be the latest in its lineup. For those who are curious as to what this show is about, it is generally a program that follows around a group of seven girls, each of them hired by WWE. Viewers will be able to follow them around in order to see different parts of their lives, whether it has to do with business or personal matters. It's the kind of show that has earned quite a bit of criticism, good and bad alike.

Wrestling fans are not going to be the ones who will enjoy this show on a universal scale and there are reasons for this. One of the main reasons is that the females they have seen on television are now being portrayed on this show in a generally negative light. Instead of seeing Natalya, for example, being the confident veteran many have known her as, this show has portrayed her as someone who's more down on herself, under the impression that she will be gone from the company. It's the kind of character change I cannot wrap my mind around.

All of the aforementioned negativity aside, I am sure that there are those who are involved in social media networking that can see the benefits behind this kind of show. This type of networking is integral to the work of a number of agencies, fishbat included amongst them. There are many different elements from reality TV that has made their way here. Whether you're talking about the focus on relationships or drama in general, it's clear that a particular audience is going to be targeted.

I am all for the females of WWE finding a greater audience but the fact that this reality show has been made for that general purpose is not something that I agree with. You have to keep in mind that WWE is not exactly short on television time these days, especially when you consider that RAW is three hours long each week. Wouldn't it make more sense for the Divas to gain time through that platform? Even so, "Total Divas" is the direction WWE is going to with, no matter what.
